beautybox five: take it easy

Beauty Box Five is a subscription-based, beauty sampling program that delivers a box filled with 5 cosmetic samples to your door step every month. I am really excited, because they have asked me to join their review program, becoming part of their beauty contributor team!

The box is a tiffany blue color, so if packaging gets your attention, you will enjoy opening this little box when it arrives! Besides the paper shreds to protect the products during their travel... Beautybox Five includes an information card, sharing the theme of the month, announcing contests, and details on products and prices.

I just got my first box - which is the October 2013, "Take It Easy" box....let's begin!!!

1. Aveeno Daily Mositurizing Lotion - $6.99

Benefits: Clinically Proven to improve the health of skin in one day, this emollient moisturizer is formulated to help prevent dryness. It will leave your skin feeling soft and naturally healthy.

Pros: This moisturizer absorbs into skin instantly-which is great for men who don't appreciate a "heavy" texture. I am going to give this to my hubby for his travel bag!
Cons: I prefer a heavy texture- something richer, when it comes to my body moisturizer.

2. Model Co Illusion Lip Pencil - $20.00

Benefits: This unique, nude pencil easily enhances your natural shape while keeping lips soft and nourished with cocoa and shea butter. Face it, there's no better pencil for plumping up that pretty little pout!

Pros: Will blend in with all lip pigment/lipstick colors for a natural enhancement to your lip size. It also has a sharpener on the lid, which is always my problem with lip liners-I never carry a sharpener with me...this is brilliant!
Cons: At the end of the day, this may not "enhance" your lip shape,  but it's still a nice lip liner color. There aren't too many negatives for this product.

3. Swissco Glitter Toe Separators - $2.00

Benefits: Feel like a princess during your next pedicure with these handy little glittered piggy-parters!

Pros: Super cute color, and sturdy design.
Cons: I don't normally do my own pedicures, so I may give this cute little tool to my sissy-she's super creative with her nails and will love this.

4. La Fresh Travel Lite Facial Cleansing Wipes - $19.99

Benefits: Packed with aloe vera, cucumber, chamomile, marshmallow and tea plant botanical extracts these, hydrating, oil-free facial wipes work with all skin types. Simply open, unfold, cleanse and go!

Pros: There is no oil, residue, sting, or heavy scent left on your skin after using these wipes.
Cons: I feel the price point is a bit high for facial wipes.

5. Nubar Alter Ego Nail Lacquer in Blondie - $8.00

Benefits: What's more fun than glitter nail polish? Um, nothing! Use alone for a beautifully translucent finish or over your favorite fall color for a glitter-studded top coat.

Pros: Gold glitter is perfect for the upcoming holidays.
Cons: It's glitter, pretty easy for anyone to use, not too many cons with it.

Instagram Photo Contest: Win the glittery Nubar Alter Ego Collection
1. Post a picture of you and your box
2. Tag @beautybox5
3. Use #BB5winprettynails

My favorite product out of this months box, was the Illusion Lip Pencil by Model Co. I can't wait for November's box!!!

Degrees of Dazzling

The BareMinerals "Degree Of Dazzling" Holiday Set includes 20 miniature sized eye shadows, perfect for any mood, outfit, or occasion. In my opinion, this is one of the best value sets they have launched in years. The finishes and the color range are flexible for any personality...and while it is geared towards the Holidays, this set can merge well with running errands and work too.

-There are 4 finishes to play with from creamy velvets, high shines, and sparkling glimmers, to deep liners.

-There are 5 color families, warm neutrals, seductive greys, perfect pinks, majestic purples, and luscious greens.

Yoga // Black Leather // Lagoon // Toasted Espresso // Starry Nigh
There are a few options to apply the liners.

1. If you want a soft look, use them dry.
2. For a smoldering creamy finish, mix a small amount of the shadow with PrimeTime eyelid primer (half/half).
3.To achieve fierce definition, run your liner brush under some water and mix the powder in the lid for a liquid liner.

Iridescent Iris // Rose Gold // Deep Sea // Pewter // Stay Golden
The High Shine shadows are perfect for Holiday parties! You can also create a foiled effect by applying them with a damp brush!

Golden Pear // Violet Spell // Ginger Sugar // Silver Dollar // Strawberry Mouse
The Sparkling Glimmers are feminine and subtle! I love the tiny sparkly they have! They are effortless, and chic! So pretty!
Velvet Nude // Velvet Emerald // Velvet Mauve // Velvet Charcoal // Velvet Lavender
The Velvet shadows have a matte finish, without looking "cakey" or dry. These are great for a soft everyday look, used on the entire eyelid as your base color. You can also use them in the crease with a dramatic smokey eye to blend and create a soft finish.

What's your favorite finish? What's your favorite hue?
Keep an eye out online and in department stores to get your hands on this set! ($79)

Add this to your wish list...

When I started dated my husband, his family would always request a wish list for Christmas. Some people are good at knowing exactly what they want, but it takes me forever to come up with a list to give to people. Was this a childhood tradition for you? Or did your family just buy whatever they thought was best for you? Well, maybe I can help you add a few items to your "wish list" this season...or maybe find a few gifts for your gal pals...

Lately my hair has become dry and more prone to tangle, Moroccan Oil Extra Volume Shampoo + Conditioner actually does what it says and detangles my hair! As for the Moroccan Oil, yes it is a higher price point, but it works. I have used lower price points from the drugstore, and they just aren't as hydrating and healing.

Hair doesn't need to be washed daily, but when you are working out or feel a bit uneasy with your natural oil production... dry shampoo is a great solution for this issue. I found Batiste at Urban Outfitters for $8.00 and was a bit over zealous and purchased a couple different scents. I'm a little bummed with the white residue it leaves, you really have to comb out the hair...otherwise your hair looks very grey. It definitely absorbs oil, but gives no volume. I still prefer Oribe over any other dry shampoo...I just wish it wasn't so expensive.

In the past I would use the same facial cleanser in the AM and PM, but there isn't really a need for me to get a deep cleanse when I just wake up. So, I started using Dior's Instant Cleansing Water just to freshen up in the AM. It's also nicknamed the lazy girl cleanser, so it can be used with a cotton pad to remove any makeup before bedtime (works great on mascara too). It leaves no residue behind so you won't feel sticky after.

Dior's One Essential seems to be a confusing product for most. It says 'super serum' on the bottle, so it has been taking over the 'serum' step for alot of people's skincare routines, but it's actually a detox product...and should be used under a serum and facial cream to help those products be more effective. It can assist any skincare routine to be 4x more efficient, so feel free to start using it with whatever you got going on already. I do have an unusual breakout since I have started this purging process, and haven't decided if I am ok with it or frustrated by it. I'm still using it to get rid of the impurities in my skin... so we shall see what happens.

As we age our lips will become smaller as they loose moisture- I highly recommend Dior's Lip Maximizer as a treatment for fuller lips. I use it 2x a day (morning and evening) sometimes 3x depending on if I remember to throw it in my purse. It has hydrated my lips, so they have not become chapped yet during this cooler weather, and my bolder red lipsticks aren't bleeding like they use to. (Great tip for the Holidays!)

This last month, my skin became ultra sensitive-so when this happens-eliminate product and reintroduce things slowly back into your routine. I haven't figured out what I was sensitive to, but during this process I fell for Cetaphil's Gentle Daily Cleansing bar and I am no longer a snob to this "sensitive" product.

Allure's November issue had an article on dark circles and I found the information quite intriguing ...did you know rubbing your eyes can cause this irritating discoloration!? Unfortunately, it can also just be in your genes...to fix this issue, find a corrector that will cut the purple/green/blue circles. Giorgio Armani cosmetics has a pink and orange corrector that I like to combine with my concealer to achieve a flawless look. Make sure to prep with eye cream, and set with a translucent powder if you normally see creasing at the end of the day.

One way to distract from sleepy eyes is to enhance the lashes. In the past I felt a lash primer was an unnecessary step (I am just lazy though) and now I am obsessed!!!! Dior's Lash Maximizer hydrates and conditions your lashes, as well as adds volume and length before mascara. LOVE THIS PRODUCT-it makes a drastic difference!

Dior Extase's brush was inspired by the layers of a dress awww... this mascara will capture your short and long lashes for a fuller effect, while promoting future growth too. The brush reminds me of my all time fav YSL but with no flaking at the end of the day.

*For best results, start at your lash base and wiggle into the tips.

Hmmmm, you can't go wrong with a cinnamon scent for the Holidays! I stock up on Illume Boulangerie candles at Anthropologie every time I visit. I have a weakness for candles, they help release stress and make my home smell delicious!

Now you have lots of new things to add to your wish lists for Christmas. Happy Tuesday friends!

Painted Purple

There is one main concern my clients and dear friends seem to share, and are a little distraught about. I repeatedly hear the sentence, "My makeup disappears by the end of the day." Is this one of your struggles too? Most of the time we are getting ready for the day around 6am, so I have been on the search this month for the perfect long-lasting products on the market. We all loved my Keep It Red find with Maybelline...so let's talk about their Eye Studio Color Tattoo 24HR Cream Gel Shadow today.

Let's start with the good stuff first. Pros: 1. It does not crease. 2. It's hue is intense. 3. Because it is such a pigmented color, the product is really packed into the jar...which means it will last you a very long time. 4. I paid under $4 for Painted Purple on sale at Longs.

Raspberry Sorbet Flavored Lip Shine by Philosophy $10.00

Cons: 1. When applying the cream shadow, it may streak, leaving some areas without any product. 2. I needed to set it with a powder shadow 3. I had to layer the cream gel shadow to create the look I preferred.

Earrings by Francesca's
When using Painted Purple, use the color on your eyelid, stopping at the crease. Smudge the left over color on the brush on your bottom lash line for full eye definition. Next, press on a powder color that is exact in it's shade (I used a discontinued Nars matte shadow). Last, soften the crease with a beige or neutral matte shadow with a pony tail brush.

River Veda- River of Knowledge

Entrepreneurs who are evolving the beauty industry are extremely inspiring-especially a woman like, Megan Douglas, who has a story behind her line River Veda. To me, the story is like an inspiration board behind a clothing line-it's insight into the process of how something was created. I was pleasantly surprised to find that she was a fashion designer in London before she created River Veda. Read all about her story here!

Its been over a week now since I've been using The Everyday Evening Primrose moisturizer and the Freshly Free Facial Toner. The toner's key ingredient is Aloe Vera Organic juice, which will heal any skin disturbances. It's suitable for any skin type because it is so gentle. It feels like you are wiping water on the skin because there is no sting or tingle. The packaging won me over before I even opened the moisturizer!! It's shaped like a tooth paste tube...and I loved that I had to pierce the opening before using (I felt comfortable that I was using an extremely fresh product!) The scent reminds me of a sugar cookie, it's not overwhelming, more citrus than than sweet hmmmm. The texture is rich, but blends into the skin pretty fast so there is no heavy feeling throughout the day.

*My skin is more oily, but lately I've been testing out more hydrating products to prevent wrinkles and slow down the aging process of my skin. So far, this has been one of the more effective moisturizers I've used in a long time! If you feel it's too heavy for you, just use it at night.

This vegan skincare line also has a partnership with Indian Community Farms-giving back to our world-which I think is so neat... Make sure to follow on River Veda on Facebook to stay up to date with this New Zealand skincare line!

Get unStuck

Life can become routine: sleep, eat, work... In the midst of your daily routines, you become comfortable with having the same food, watching the same TV show...and repeating the same steps to your beauty ritual. Any type of curve-ball gets most in a frenzy, especially when your favorite product is discontinued-horrible I know. Lately, I have been feeling kind of "stuck" in my week. So I am going to challenge myself to get unStuck.

1.Mascara is the easiest way to get unStuck from your beauty routine. You need to replenish this product so often, why not try something new....and SHOCKING! I love the smell of YSL...and the length it provides is a little crazy!

2.While technology is the future, I am hesitant to join the crowd but an ipad is the perfect way to showcase my portfolio. I will be facing my fear of trying something new, with a Tory Burch to help guide me.

3. I always do my own manicures, I've been inspired to create designs with Sally Hansen's Nail Art Pen.

4. My goal is for my hubby to try new things too-pedicures at the spa with me! I am going to learn how to use a cuticle trimmer in the meantime for at home maintinence.

5. I needed to re-vamp my color and have had no time to visit my friend's salon....This NEW formula by Garnier only takes 10 minutes. Time saver, yes please! ...and I noticed it did not stain by sink like some have in the past.

6.I've been intrigued with styling my hair more, so these small Conair clear poly bands are perfect to assist me.

7.Whole foods gets me into trouble...and for some reason they decided to put a beauty isle next to the dairy. Pistachio Foot Repair Cream has been starring at me for a few weeks now. It was under $8 so I decided to give it a go. It's hydrating and has a oilier texture than a normal lotion or cream.

Are you stuck in a rut? What new things have you tried lately?

My very own "Special Issue"

I randomly pick up magazines while at the grocery store. I keep saying I am going to get a subscription, and while it will save me money I prefer to pick and choose what magazine and issue I want to read. Obviously, when I saw Allure's October "Special Issue" on the Best of Beauty, I bought it! So here is my own "Special Issue" of the week. A girl can dream to be a Beauty Editor of a fancy magazine-right????

1. Dallas-Benefit 2. Media Lipstick-MAC 3. Waking up in Vegas-Deborah Lippmann nail color

Intense Exfolikate-Kate Somerville

5. Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil-Organix 6. They're Real! Mascara-Benefit

7.235 Split Fibre Allover Eye Brush-MAC 8. Feathers-FAUX Lash

Enjoy

Hume = Happiness

August has been a very busy month for me, so it's been tough keeping up with posting on a regular basis. It's wedding season, we recently moved to a new place, annnnd I celebrated my 1 year anniversary with my hubby! I feel like we just got married! Soon-to-be-Mrs listen up-enjoy every moment of planning your wedding...indulge in the details, take joy in the mishaps of the preparation, and on your day stand still and soak it all in! The day ends SO fast. I wasn't expecting a whole year to fly by just as quick as my wedding day, so enjoy your first year of marriage to the fullest!! I guess the saying is true, time flies when you are having fun.

James and I met at Hume Lake years ago, so it was only appropriate we spend our first anniversary in this beautiful place. Ever girl squeals over her Summer Camp crush, so to come back with a husband and relive those butterflies was so fun. We hiked to the cove, played volleyball & frisbee golf, rented paddle boards to absorb the beauty of the lake, enjoyed milkshakes, sat by a campfire...sigh and just soaked in the beauty of the trees.

Living Proof Shampoo & Conditioner. Kiehl's Acai Damage-Minimizing Cleanser. Laura Mercier Oil Free Tinted Moisturizer & Eye Basic in Buff. Dior Lip Maximizer.
I packed very light, but thought it was the perfect time to try out my Living Proof Shampoo and Conditioner. I was skeptical...I have tried some other products in the past and they didn't work for my hair. I was pleasantly surprised with these 2 choices, the results were great! When you travel to new heights, your hair reacts strangely, but my hair was soft, healthy, and not frizzy at all. Also, when I took out my pony tail, the hair was less crimped than normal!

As we were moving, I found Kiehl's Acai Damage-Minimizing Cleanser. Perfect for our trip!  I felt one with nature using such an organic based product. It is so important to find products that can target all concerns. I felt this completed the task controlling my oily skin, while preventing signs of aging in my skin. I also appreciated the foam texture.

Choose a lighter tone for your manicure, and a darker hue for your pedicure!

Our view during breakfast!
What did you do for your first wedding anniversary????

The Joy of Adult Acne

Over the past few months, it seems very common that majority of my friends are suffering from adult acne (not to be confused with Rosacea). Last year when we started planning our wedding I noticed a large breakout, and this annoyance is still around. Before I had the occasional pimple around "my time of the month"...I'd put some toothpaste on it and it would subside. However, my skin now transitioned into consistently having Acne.

Here are a few products I have tested, loved, stopped using...and so on...

1. I first started with Mario Badescu's Glycolic Acid Toner and popular Drying Lotion. I bought the toner because it was alcohol free, yet still effective at exfoliating with 2% Gylcolic Acid and Grapefruit Extract. I did get bored with this toner and moved to another product soon after. Do not shake the Drying Lotion, just dip a Q-Tip into the pink layer, and than apply as a spot treatment. This isn't the cutest look, since you must wear it over night...

2. The Clarisonic tools make you reconsider "clean" skin. Read about the difference here. The plus is nice for the body, but I use my Mia more frequently because it fits into my hand perfectly...and my travel bag!

3. Good ol' Clinique 3-Step!! I NEVER had a "routine" for my skincare due to my anxiousness to try new products, but I have now gone through my second purchase with 3-Step and will most likely continue to use it. The Liquid Facial Soap for Oily Skin is my formula of choice, it does not leave my skin feeling tight at all. It also pairs nicely with the Clarisonic. When I first started the Clarifying Lotion #3 it tingled! It doesn't tingle anymore, and I kinda miss it. My hubby is obsessed with this pink bottle, he uses it on his face and chest, so we go through this bottle pretty fast. Lastly, I chose the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Gel because I like the light feeling it offers. (Just a note, you will need more hydration this is only going to balance the skin, and there is no SPF.) Ladies, this is a perfect trio for you and your man to share!

4. Kiehl's Kiehl's Kiehl's...You have seen this Rare Earth Pore Cleansing Masque here before. I apply it in my T-Zone at least once a week, while I vacuum or fold laundry. It's a five minute masque, and it's my favorite masque, YES, my FAVORITE!! I use the Pore Refining Toner now and than, eventually I will try the cleanser and lotion. During the P.M I will sometimes use the Over-Night Biological Peel, this helps to reduce the look (size) of pores.

5. Ok, I found it! The one acne treatment I use too often. DDF's Acne Control Treatment. I only apply it where I need it...after my moisturizer, day and night. It drys up the acne, so make sure you are only using where and when needed. It's quite magical!!!

Once again, toothpaste is a great (cheap) remedy if you have nothing else. Aquafresh is what I would recommend.

XOXO

BAKED!

New cosmetic launches pop up at least once a week. How new colors are consistently created amazes me...there is nothing new under the sun, yet new colors just keep arising! While new eye shadow colors can be fun to look at, sometimes the formula doesn't have the best application, or technology to back up it's pretty hue. Here is a new launch that I do appreciate the quality as well as the color.

Laura Mercier's NEW Baked eye Colours ($22) are shadows that will last throughout the day. They are lightweight, smudge resistant, and able to be used wet (creamy consistency) or dry (great for contouring!).

I am loving Black Karat and Ballet Pink. What's your favorite color?

Bikini Pink

Bikini Pink is my latest lipstick obsession. Bobbi Brown's NEW Rich Lip Color SPF 12 ($22) is keeping my lips content from morning till night. The base of the lipstick is clear, with pigments to deliver a crisp color with just one swipe. Besides it's unique gel texture, it's moisturizing formula... I'm really loving how well it lasts. It's not a stain, but the color sure lasts like one! I would highly recommend this new line of lipstick to the working girl, the soon-to-be-MRS as she walks down the isle, or someone who tends to have chapped lips. The color options are fresh, simple, and fun.

Stay tuned: I will be doing a collaboration photo shoot and I'm thinking of using Bikini Pink as the main lip color!

Instant smooth, Instant tan, Instant gorgeous!

Readers, I have found a new sunless face tanner that is delicious, flawless, and user friendly. Clarins is well known for their skincare products, however I feel they do best in their sunless self tanners.

Clarins NEW Instant Smooth Tanning
($32.50)product offers a perfect glow for any skin tone or type. Here's how to use it, and why I loved it...

1. I did my normal skincare routine in the A.M, cleanse, tone, hydrate...

2. I used a small amount of Clarins Instant Smooth Tanner as a primer before my foundation (Acacia Micro-Pearls – Moisture-absorbing micro pearls plump-up to fill in lines and wrinkles, diminishing their length and depth).

3. It smelled good, and throughout the day remained pleasant (Carmel apple scent).

4. It's color was natural, and gave me more of a radiance-no streaks! (A few people noticed and complimented my glow...So I continued its use to see the reactions...more compliments came my way!)

5. It helped my foundation last longer!!

Elite and High Culture Brows

My first healthy relationship with cosmetics began with a line called Benefit. Benefit had so much personality, we always had fun together so when I moved into a more mature cosmetic relationship I had high standards that needed to be met.

I still have my assortment of beginners products...I just can't seem to let go of those past memories. The "IT" Stick, Dallas...and my all time favorite product High Brow.

High Brow is like a past love letter that will never get thrown away, it's just too good to be true and you'll never find anything like it again.

Highbrow is synonymous with intellectual; as an adjective, it also means elite, and generally carries a connotation of high culture. I would say Benefit gave this Brow lifting pencil an appropriate title.

To use, draw a line under your eyebrow. To blend, use a cream shadow brush or your fingers if you must. This pencil blends with all skin tones, and will hide any out of place hair. It's great alone to open up the eyes, or used as the finishing touches to fade out a smokey eye.

It's a makeup must have for only $20 (You will need a dual pencil sharpener)

Click here for a tutorial for the perfect brows!

Don't forget to check out their blog
or facebook page for exciting offers, new launches, or tutorials.

No more tired toes!

For those of you who are working hard and on your feet all day...read on!!

I am all about a good foot rub, or a spa day with the girls...but sometimes life does not permit these relaxing and oh so deserving luxuries. Sometimes I go weeks without pampering my little toes with a pedicure, so in the meantime I let my feet know I love them by using philosophy's Soul Owner. I lavishly spread soul owner on my heels and balls of my feet (drop some Hydrating cuticle oil by Deborah Lippman on my cuticles...)pop some socks on before bedtime, and in the morning-WAH-LAH! My feet are exfoliated and renewed. NO MORE dry feet. The cream super-charges with salicylic and glycolic acids, it helps reduce rough soles. It's an overnight wonder-and only $14. It's a great remedy till you can get over to your favorite nail salon.

Enjoy my secret friends!

Creme de Corps

Last year I bought a Ford Edge, it's a great little commuter vehicle...the main reason I fell in love with it was because of it's fabulous moon roof. The past few days I have had the liberty of enjoying my moon roof, the sun has been spoiling me with it's rays, and oh have I enjoyed it during my drive to work. I have been pushing my luck, trying to get away with mini skirts without tights...it's not quite that warm yet which makes me yearn for the summertime.

In the meantime during these cold days, I have stumbled across a unique body wash and a new favorite body moisturizer to prep my skin. I enjoy a nice body scrub, rough particles always make me believe I am doing some deep cleaning. I tend to overlook hydrating body washes-so when I was given the Creme de Corps Soy Milk and Honey Body Polish by Kiehl's I was stoked! My first experience left me in awe, I was yelling out ingredients to James as I read on in the shower. James says I am always running behind, because I am distracted by my new beauty products I bring home. I just can't help telling him why "this and that" is so wonderful and why he needs to try it. Anyways, overall this product took care of all my concerns: exfoliation, cleansing, and hydration! It was nice to have a 3 in 1 product. I followed up with Kiehl's NEW Creme de Corps Soy Milk & Honey Whipped Body Butter. Although it doesn't have coconut in it, my nose grasped the presence of coconuts beautiful scent. All who know me, know I am a sucker for anything coconut...hmmmm. The texture of the Body Butter was luxurious, it was not sticky, oily, or too heavy/too light. It was perfection. These products are great for men and women, and great for those on a budget!

Follow Kiehl's on Facebook for promotions, tips, and more information on their products.

I can't wait for summer!

Do you need Hope in your Life?

I think every woman needs some inspiration, something to give her hope in life...

Do you love Oprah? Is your skin thirsty?

If you missed out on Oprah's Ultimate Favorite things for 2010 click here to catch up. I was in shock at how much she gave out to her audience. I was on the phone with my hubby and he said it would be smart to get me on the show... too bad it was her last time handing out all those goodies. Besides the diamond earrings, and the 2012 VW Beetle...the screaming crowd received the moisturizer she's been using for 10 years: Hope in a Jar.
Philosophy created a commemorative, limited-edition 'hope in a jar' moisturizer. It comes in a dazzling box covered in sparkling red glitter with little baby Oprah on the front.

Hope in a Jar for all skin types, gently exfoliates, hydrates, and protects the skin. It is a light weight formula that helps rid of lines and wrinkles, and fades discoloration. It gives your skin the antioxidants it needs to hinder any future environmental damage. Your skin will look more radiant with each use due to the exfoliation. It will also help with repairing the skin.

It does not have an SPF so make sure your foundation has one in it-or you use an additional SPF.

Philosophy is such an inspiring line, they have adorable quotes that really lift you up and make you think.
